Natural Gas Safety: Providing safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers is our top priority, but sometimes problems do occur. Should a problem arise, call our office at (865)-453-3272 immediately. For your safety, place the utility phone number on or near your telephone.
Follow Appliance Directions:
- Read your appliance manuals.
- Use your appliances only for their intended purpose.
- Follow recommended maintenance schedules.
- Call a professional if service is required.
Safeguard Combustibles:
- Read your appliance manuals.
- Keep paper, flammable fluids, and cloth away from pilots, open flames, and surfaces that become hot when the appliance is in use.
Educate Your Family - Especially Children:
- Become familiar with your gas appliances.
- Warn of hot surfaces, including vent pipes.
- Do not allow children to play with appliance controls.
Learn to Recognize the Odorant Added to Natural Gas:
- Natural gas is odorless, so S·C·U·D has added a distinctive chemical odorant called mercaptan to help you recognize it. The chemical odor is often compared to the smell of rotten eggs.
If you detect a faint or persistent odor of gas present in your home or business, or if you hear a hissing sound of escaping natural gas, CONTACT S·C·U·D at (865) 453-3272.

Carbon Monoxide Safety: Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced when fuels such as gasoline, fuel oil, propane, kerosene, natural gas, coal and wood burn. An unsafe concentration of Carbon Monoxide occurs when there is incomplete combustion and inadequate venting. The most common sources are automobiles, and furnaces and boilers that haven't been properly maintained.
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning:
- Flu-like symptoms: nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, confusion.
- In many cases, victims are aware they are not well, but become too disoriented to save themselves.
- Particularly vulnerable are pregnant women. Also: small children, senior citizens and people with heart or respiratory problems.
Safety tips
- Have professional annual inspections and cleanings of heating systems, vents, flues and chimneys.
- Occasionally conduct your own visual inspections. Look for improper connections, rust, stains or water build up.
- Never leave a car running in a garage
- Never use gas or charcoal grills in an enclosed area.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, especially near bedrooms.
- If you suspect carbon monoxide, get fresh air and call 911.
