Service Center - Measurements & Definitions

BTU - Abbreviation for British Thermal Unit, which is a measure of heat content or heating value. It is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit.

BURNER- A device for consuming fuel where a flame is produced.

CF -A measurement of volume. This is the amount of gas that would occupy 1 cubic foot at a temperature of 60°F and 14.73 psia.  This is a measurement of natural gas volume that has a heating value of approximately 1,040 BTU’s.

CCF - One hundred (100) cubic feet. CCF is a measurement of natural gas volume that has a heating value of approximately 1 therm or 100,000 BTU’s.

THERM - The equivalent of one hundred thousand (100,000) BTU’s.

DEKATHERM - The equivalent of ten (10) therms.

MCF - One thousand (1,000) cubic feet of natural gas.  This is the equivalent of 10 therms or approximately 1,000,000 BTU’s.

PILOT LIGHT- A small permanent flame used to ignite gas at a burner

METER- An instrument for measuring and recording the amount of a commodity or service consumed.
